New Information for the 2nd Nine Weeks ~ Starting October 13th

 Knights,

We are almost ready to close the book on the first nine weeks of school.  Starting October 13th, there will be several changes at KLMS for online and on-campus learners.   I have posted a slide deck to highlight the campus expectations for those just returning to campus as well as provide information about the upcoming changes.  Click here for quick access to the slide deck.  If you are unfamiliar with a slide deck, one nice feature is that you can easily jump to the page you want by clicking on the "Slide #" tab at the bottom - you can see the titles of all slides to access information quickly.  We will be welcoming back almost half of our students, so we made some changes to maximize distance and minimize class size.  In order to level class sizes, some students will have schedule changes.  Students will be able to see the new classes in Skyward, but will not have Canvas or Google tiles until Wednesday, October 14th.

Here are the biggest changes:

  • Students will log into Canvas everyday to complete assignments or link to their Google Classroom.
    • Why? Canvas is a more robust learning mamangement system with better tracking of student progress (which will also help with attendance) and it provides better access to information for parents.
    • When?  Teachers will start transitioning lessons and training students on Canvas starting October 13th.  As we teach students Canvas, we will slowly stop using Google Classroom.
  • We will have a new bell schedule with 4 lunches and the addition of Catapult (advisory).
    • Why?  Using four lunches allows us 1) keep students in the cafeteria for lunch instead of eating in a classroom, and 2) allows us to offer Catapult (an advisory/student support time).
    • When? We will start the new schedule on October 13th.  Check the slide deck to know which lunch your student has (slide 20).
  • Tuesday, October 13 will be an asynchronous day for all online students.
    • Why? With schedules changing at the end of a grading period, the students new classes will not be in Canvas or Google Classroom until Wednesday.  We do not want students missing Zoom instruction because they do not have access to the classrooms.  They will use their original classes and the teachers will transfer any work.
    • When? Tuesday, October 13th.

I hope you and your family are able to relax and enjoy the long weekend!
Stay healthy and safe,

Dina Schaefer
