KLMS Updates - Week of Oct. 4th

 Knights,

This week is the last week of the first grading cycle - we have now completed 25% of the school year!

I have been constantly reflecting on our school year to assess the social-emotional-learning (SEL) needs of our students, faculty, and parents.  Trying to meet the social desires, emotional needs, and learning gaps of students has been exhausting for everyone (parents included)!  I will speak for myself when I say that I thought students would settle back into school routines quickly; however, I am excited that over the past few weeks I have seen higher levels of academic conversation among students, such as: helping each answer questions, referring to text evidence to justify their answers, and exploring alternative ways of solving a problem.  These are positive signs that we are on the path to being the Knight learning community we envision.

Thank you to the families that contributed to the goody bags for the teachers - most were delivered Friday and we have a few more to go.  The kind notes and support were needed and well received.  The Kelly Lane community of parents has always had a strong influence on the strength of our school.  Thank you for the continued support and partnership!

Here are some things happening around campus in October:

  1. Picture day was Friday, October 1.  If you missed picture day, or want to re-take the picture, mark Novermber 12th on your calendar.  If you missed ordering pictures prior to Friday, don't worry!  You can still order pictures online at mylifetouch.com and use code: EVT3DQFNH
  2. Students do not have school on Friday, Oct. 8th or Monday, Oct. 11th.
  3. UIL (for students invovled in athletic, fine arts, or academic competition): students can gain OR lose ugibility based on grades for 1st nine weeks.  If a student was ineligible but passes ALL classes, they will regain eligibility on October 14th.  If a student fails ANY class, they will be become ineligible for UIL competition on October 14th for at least 3 weeks.
  4. The PSAT for 8th grade students is October 20th during the school day.
  5. If a student fails a core course or high school credit course for the 1st nine weeks grading period, they should plan to attend Saturday School from 9-12 on October 23rd, October 30th, and November 6th to recover credit.
  6. The football and volleyball seasons will end at the end of October.  If your student wants to tryout for the basketball team, I encourage them to speak with the coaches about tryouts and expectations.  Student eligibility can be used in making team selection decisions.
  7. District band auditions are Saturday, October 30th.  Good luck to our musicians!

Please stay safe and healthy,
Dina Schaefer
