Knights,
School is starting to feel and look normal again - classrooms are full of activities and conversation, volleyball and football are in full swing, I can hear the band practicing the fight song, the gym will be ready for use next week, students are learning how to open combination locks, the lunch room has settled into efficient routines, theatre has started their One Act Play auditions, and I can hear the voices of students throughout the day. With these things, there are still precautions that we must abide to, so I can't say everything is back to normal...
News about COVID and Notification Letters
By now, several of you have likely received at least one letter notifying you of possible close contact with an individual at KLMS. I know it can be confusing with what to do - should you, can you, send your student to school? What happens if you keep them home? I am hoping to answer some of the those questions you here, but I have also posted some FAQs on the KLMS website.
The biggest question is what does the letter mean?
- An individual in one of your student's classes or activities has notified the school that they tested positive for COVID.
- There is no guarantee your student was within 6 feet of the individual; therefore, it is called a possible close contact.
- We notify students that were in the class for the 48 hours prior to 1) the day their symptoms started, or 2) the day they tested positive (which ever happened first).
- We generally are able to send the notification the day we received notification of the test results, this does not mean that the possible exposure was the 48 hours before the letter. Typically, we are notified within 1 day of testing positive, therefore usually the possible contact was within the last 3-4 days of school.
- You can elect to quarantine at home or you can elect to come to school.
- Students are marked absent (excused or noted with a "Q" code).
- Students can complete while under quarantine by accessing their Canvas class or connecting with their teacher.
- There are no Zooms meetings or synchronous instruction options for absent students.
- FAQs on the KLMS website.
- If you receive a letter, and intend to quarantine at home, you can complete this form so we know to code your student with a "Q" for the quarantine days.
News from the Nurse
- If you would like for your student to be able to take medication at school, please complete the form and review the medication policy.
- Please make sure that we have the most up-to-date medical information for your student so we can safely and quickly assist your student when needed.
- If you would like to have the nurse COVID test your student, please contact Katie Schorre (email Katie.Schorre@pfisd.net) to schedule a time. Parents must be present for testing.
News about the Interim Progress Report (IPR)
- The IPR period ends tomorrow, September 3rd at 4:30pm. Because these are snapshots, teachers cannot delay reporting the grades to give students extra time.
- Please know that these are not official grades. If your student has been absent (illness, quarantine, or other), they may be behind in work. If absences are the issue, students can turn in work upon their return and the grades can be altered.
- This IPR cycle is not connected to eligibility for students. This means that a failing grade on the IPR will not prevent a student from participating in a UIL event.
- You can view the IPR through Skyward by 1) clicking on the "Portfolio" icon on the homepage or click on "student" in the main menu then select "portfolio" and 2) select 2021-2020 IPR 1. The images below will hopefully help you navigate Skyward menus.
