Starting School

Knights,

The first day of school is quickly approaching and we can't wait to see everyone! Here is some information to help make the start of school go smoothly and lessen the anxiety of students.  We have adjusted some of the procedures to maximize the safety for students staff.

KLMS Safety Procedures
Although the district cannot require masks, we are strongly encouraging students and staff to wear a mask even if they are vaccinated.  Wearing masks during Stage 4 is consistent with the CDC and the Austin Public Health recommendations.

We made the following decisions to maximize distance between students and staff to reduce the chances for exposure and quarantine while providing for the emotional and social needs of students and maintaining instructional systems and supports that will maximize student learning.

Arriving @ KLMS - By using different doors we can disperse students in a manner that will lessen crowding and ease the flow of traffic.
  • Bus Riders enter through the front door
  • Car Riders Drop off in the back of the school @ either 13 or the Band hall door
  • Walkers can enter the front door, door 13 (by the 8th grade office), or the Band hall door.
Afternoon Dismissal - All students will exit the building at the final bell @ 3:35.  Students are expected to leave campus immediately in most expeditous path possible.  This will eliminate the need  to stagger the dismissal times.  Any student riding a bus should report to their bus as quickly as possible.

Cafeteria - Students will have assigned tables and are expected to stay at their assigned table to reduce exposure.  When students arrive on campus, we will explain which tables report to which cafeteria lines.  Please know that if students need more time to eat, they can notify one of the staff members in the cafeteria and we will assist them.  If your student is getting a school lunch, they will need to know their student ID number (also called their "S#").

All students will have access to free breakfast and lunch; regardless of economic need.  If a student forgets their lunch, we cannot accept lunch drop off but they will access to a full school lunch and will not be hungry.

Restrooms - Students should the restroom during the passing period.  Students should wash their hands for 20 seconds prior to leaving the restroom.

Lockers - All students will be issued a locker; this will allow each student to have a secured place to store excess school supplies and/or their Chromebooks during lunch.  Students are not required to use their lockers, but they will be issued one after the start of school.

Bags - Backpacks & sling bags are allowed throughout the school day.  Any bag a student carries to class must fit under their desk or hang on the back of their desk without impeding the desk behind them.  If students have excess items, they can be stored in the locker.

Before School Starts
6th Grade Camp - Wednesday, August 4th from 8:30-11:30.  Click here for the Camp Registration Form or click here to go to the KLMS webspage for 6th grade camp. This camp is hosted by PTO and serves to give students time to meet classmates, ask questions, and learn how to use the lockers while learning the layout of the school and cafeteria. The goal is that this will help ease the transition to middle school and first day nerves.  Please note that there is a fee for camp as it serves as the main fundraiser for the PTO.  **NEW guidance** Parents will not be allowed to attend the camp.  Please plan to drop students off in the back of the school and return to pick them up in the front of the school.

7th & 8th Refresher (as needed) Tuesday, August 10th from 6:00 (7th)/ 6:30(8th) until 7:15. This is an come & go opportunity for students who need, or want, to familiarize themselves with the school, given that several students have not been on campus at all or since 6th grade. 7th grade students will start in the cafeteria at 6:00 and 8th grade students will start in the cafeteria at 6:30; their principals will meet with them briefly and then dismiss them for a self-guided tour.  **NEW guidance** Parents will not be allowed to attend.  Please plan to drop students off in the front of the school and return to pick them up in the front of the school.

**CHANGE** 2021 Welcome Walk - Given the move to Stage 4, we are shifting the process for our 2021 Welcome Walk.  On August 9th, in lieu of physically going to homes, our Catapult teachers will be reaching out their Catapult students.  We will communicate more specifics as the times near.

First Day of School ~ Thursday, August 12th
Students will report to the Catapult teachers on the first day and we will have an altered bell schedule.
Catapult is our advisory period - on a student schedule it will show Period 10 - Advisory.  Catapult teachers will give students their schedules.
