Summer Information

Summer is here!
I hope everyone is enjoying the chance to relax and rejuvenate.  I just returned from fantastic road trip with my family- I saw so many wonderful things and amazing places, it was truly inspiring.  We still so much of summer left, I just wanted to touch base with everyone.

What to do during summer:
  • Summer Reading.  All students are encouraged to read throughout the summer; students enrolled in PAP English Language Arts must read at least one book from this list (for the appropriate grade).
  • Reinforce inference and measurement/distance skills.  These are notoriously difficult for young adults, at all secondary grade levels.  What are they and how can you help?
    • Inferencing- the ability to draw a logical conclusion based on evidence/facts/statements; this skill is critical for making predictions, assessing reasonableness of answers, and justifying answers.  Parents can: ask students to make a prediction and explain why they think that will happen (for example: on a TV show or story), ask students to explain why YOU think something will happen, or ask students to rule out possible outcomes and explain their thinking.
    • Measurement/distance- being able to accurately measure using a ruler, scale, or other measuring device as well as recognizing the difference in units (feet vs. inches, ounces vs. pounds, standard vs. metric).  Parents can: have students help measure or make plans for changes at the house (rearrange furniture, draw a room to scale, measure for new curtains or rugs, determine how much paint might be needed to pain a room), help determine mileage to a summer destination (how many miles or how long should in take?), or track activity in an activity tracking device or phone.

How to prepare for school in the fall:
  • 6th grade students should register for 6th Grade Camp, to be held on August 10th from 8:30 - 11:30.  Registering for the event provides a t-shirt and lunch.  During camp, parents may provide the proof of residency required (all students must have proof of residency, regardless of the elementary school they attended); students may also pick up course verification sheets.
  • Course Verification pick-up will be August 16th for 7th and 8th grade students from 3:00 - 6:00pm.  7th grade students must have proof of current immunizations on file or with them to pick up the course verification.  *Please note, this is not the actual schedule but does allow parents and students to verify they are registered for the correct courses to minimize transitions and confusion after school starts.
  • 7th Grade Immunizations.  All students 11 years or older, must have proof of updated immunizations on file.  These can be faxed to the KLMS office at 512-594-2805, scanned and emailed to Aimee.Kurio@PFISD.net, or hand delivered to the office.  Immunizations must be up-to-date before the first day of school.  Student may not attend classes without proof of the updated immunizations.
Be safe and enjoy the 4th of July!
