Returning from Spring Break

Knights,

We hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather during Spring Break!  The remaining spring semester will go so fast so here are some things to watch for!

8th grade student?  Make sure you check out our transition page.  The 8th graders still have their panoramic picture, 8th grade dance, and end of the year trip before officially saying goodbye to middle school.  If your 8th grader wants to try out for Hendrickson Hawk Cheer, do not delay!  Check out the HHS Hawk Cheer website, packets are due March 26th (Tuesday after break).

6th or 7th grade athlete?  If your student is planning on athletics for next year, please make sure you read the rules for physicals.  Physicals must be dated after April 15th for sports the following school year.  If you need the physical, but your well baby appointments don't line up, you can go to urgent care clinics (and some other offices, but call first) and get a sports physical for a nominal fee.

Incoming 6th grade student?  Watch for announcements of 6th grade camp, it will be about 1 week prior to the start of school.  Here is our page for the 6th grade transition information.

Some student events still to come:
*Dance tryouts have been postponed; a date will be announced as soon as it is available.
*High School Musical, Jr. production is April 25-27.  See the calendar for details.
*Soccer and Golf seasons.  See the calendar for game & tournament information.
*Spirit Assembly on April 12

STAAR Testing
Check out our new STAAR website to help parents and students prepare for STAAR.  It includes a calendar, tips for preparing, rules for STAAR testing, and links to TEA resources.  It also includes allowable snack and clothing options (see testing rules).

Along with with social end of year events, we also have our academic end of year events.
STAAR testing dates:
April 9 - Writing 7 and Reading 8 (all 7th and 8th grade students)
April 10 - Math 8 (all students taking Intro to Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-AP Math 7)
May 8 - Algebra End of Course
May 13 - Math 6 and 7 (all students taking Pre-AP Math 6, Math 6, and Math 7)
May 14 - Reading 6 and 7 (all students in 6th and 7th grade)
May 15 - Science 8 (all 8th grade students)
May 16- Social Studies 8 (all 8th grade students)

Please note that we are a closed campus during STAAR testing; this means that visitors will not be allowed on campus regardless of grade.  Even if your student is not one of the testing grades, visitors will not be allowed for lunch or other reasons.

If you want to help prepare your student for STAAR, consider the following every day things that will have a direct, and positive, impact on their testing.  For more details, go to this website.
1. Read every day, at least 20 minutes.  Brochure: Ten Facts Parents Should Know about Reading.
2. Ask your student to make predictions and inferences about stories, movies, social events, etc.
3. Involve your student in measuring the world around them- baking, decorating, yard work, etc.

Thank you,
Dina
